This sixth edition was issued during Lincoln’s lifetime and Presidency. (The book that belonged to President Lincoln and was later published in the mid-twentieth century under the title “Lincoln’s Devotional,” is a fourth edition [1852]. The text is unchanged.) Surviving editions of the pocket religious text that become known as “Lincoln’s Devotional” are extremely rare.
Published by the Religious Tract Society, London at Depository, 56, Paternoster Row, and 65 St. Paul’s Churchyard. Printed by Chiswick Press: –Whittingham and Wilkins, Tooks Court, Chancery Lane. Blue cloth-covered, embossed boards with metal (probably brass) edge protectors and clasp. Gilt letting on front cover; gilt text block. A true mini book (under 3 inches).
Condition notes (as photographed): Overall fair condition. Separation of front and back covers; fraying of cloth at spine. Interior binding remains tight, with some threads exposed. Some pages are chipped along the top edge (fragments are preserved within). Tanning throughout. Wear and soiling commensurate with age.
