
Les Aventures Extraordinaires de Joseph Rouletabille, Reporter by French reporter and novelist Gaston Leroux, author of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra (The Phantom of the Opera) and Le mystère de la chambre jaune (The Mystery of the Yellow Room). The third in Leroux’s series about the globe-trotting journalist gumshoe, set in revolution-turbulent Russia. Issued as a paperback crime mystery novel, subsequently (and beautifully) bound, though the first cover plate was not preserved. Published in French by Pierre Lafitte & Cie, Paris, 1913. No illustrations.
One-quarter leather over colorful marbled boards with stamped gilt lettering and decoration. Raised bands on the spine, rough-cut foredge, gilt top edge, and colorful marbled pastedown. Binders’ mark on the front free endpaper, Brentano’s, New York, and a sticker on the back pastedown “Brentano’s Washington.” A script printed “R” on the final page of text. 348 pages. Rubbing, bumping, and shelfware to the exterior. Tanning, some chipping along the rough-cut edge, most notably on the title page. Binding cracked at the hinge, slightly cocked. Green place-mark ribbon is detached. $95 and initials, possibly “B.T/F,L.” lightly penciled on front free endpapers. Overall, fair+ to good condition, as photographed.
