“J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator,” First Edition 1995

Houghton Mifflin, Boston & New York, 1995. Edited by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. First edition, first printing, with complete number line and unclipped jacket. Black cloth-covered boards with stamped gilt. Depicts over two hundred of Tolkien’s original paintings, sketches, and illustrations, many of which were previously unpublished. I found reading it to be an evocative experience that sometimes left me breathless.

Publisher’s blurb: This book explores Tolkien’s art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-Earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children (notably in his ‘Father Christmas’ letters and for the story of Mr. Bliss), his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books.

Excellent vintage condition with some signs of age and shelf wear to the jacket only.
