second edition harriet land handbook: A Manual for Pediatric House Officers

This spiral-bound text is the second edition issued by Johns Hopkins for practitioners of pediatric medicine. It includes a new forward, as well as the original forward by the Harriet Lane House Staff (1952). The guide is separated into three parts, Diagnostic Tests, Therapeutic Data, and Reference Data, and includes an extensive index, numerous charts and tables, and charming sketches. 215 pages.

Aside from a few small page creases, it is in perfect condition. The Harriet Lane handbook is a staple in pediatric medicine. Now in its 22nd edition, a new edition is published every three years, written by doctors during their three-year residency, in consultation with faculty. It is evidence-based, pocket-sized for quick reference, and published in several languages.

This scarce piece of medical history is a wonderful and irreplaceable gift for a pediatric practitioner or student; a patron or benefactor of Johns Hopkins; or an admirer or descendant of Harriet Lane.

Harriet Lane was the only person appointed to serve as First Lady of the United States by an unmarried President, her uncle James Buchanan. While in the White House, she advocated for social causes and showed support for artists. In Memoria of her deceased sons, she dedicated a small fortune for the establishment of the Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children in Baltimore, Maryland, and bequeathed the construction of the St. Alban’s School for boys serving in the choir at Washington National Cathedral. She left her art collection to the Smithsonian.
