“A New Illustrated Edition, revised and enriched with new notes, etc. by the author.” It would make a thoughtful collection addition for a fan of Jane Austen or Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte.
In Georgian Great Britain (1801), after the Russian invasion of Poland, Jane Porter writes a Polish refugee to London protagonist in this historical novel-meets-novel-of-manners. Porter gives readers a bewitching romance, a mystery, an ancestral journey, and an examination of economics, immigration, gender, and prejudice. The book enjoyed early success, and Porter helped pen the way for her contemporary Jane Austen, as well as for the Brontes.
